This blackish-brown, tar-like substance is formed over centuries by the decomposition of plant and microbial matter. It is a sticky exudate from rock layers in high altitude zones of mountains, particularly in the rocks of the Himalayas. It is formed by organic and plant compounds compressed by layers of rock and the slow decomposition of plants over centuries.
